Intro Post

Hello! My name is Kira Hyde and this is (hopefully) my last semester at Dominican University. I am graduating with my Master's of Library and Information Sciences. I currently live in Upstate New York so may be on a different time schedule than you.

I find that I probably spend too much time on my personal social media, so I am interested in how I can translate those skills to a work environment. Here is a very brief introduction to my relationship with social media.

I remember when I first came across the term "introvert" it resonated so clearly with me. It wasn't that I hated socializing but that it wore me out. This was around when I got facebook. I believe I was in 10th grade and it was 2010 when I first logged into facebook. It is still probably my most used social media. It became a way to socialize and interact with my family, friends, crushes, and classmates.

I liked facebook, and social media in general because it is easy to socialize on my own time. I can connect in my own way. Along with being an introvert I am also very anxious. With social media it is very easy to craft your best self. I like to think I have a healthy dose of authenticity in my social media presence but everything online is still very carefully crafted.

Some of my main social media apps and sites I use are; facebook, instagram, tiktock, and storygraph.

Here is my current Facebook Photo and my bio description:

"I’m Nobody! Who are you?

Are you – Nobody – too?

Then there’s a pair of us!"

This is my facebook picture and it has been for the last few months. I typically use a very recent selfie as my profile picture. This is one way I try to be authentic when people interact with me; they don’t see an avatar, or a generic photo but my face. I like to use facebook to keep up with different facebook groups, such as a library advice group or a fan group for a tv show. When I post on facebook now it is usually a meme or a quote with commentary. Facebook messenger is also how I communicate with most of my friends and family (usually in some variation of group chat).

My Instagram bio is the same but I have a different picture:

For instagram I do not add as much content as I consume. Here I have a slightly older photo. Instagram is where I go to follow creators I like, such as cosplayers, historical fashion creators, celebrities, or just funny creators.

And this is my Storygraphy photo and username (I only just joined and would love to add more friends if you would like to friend me 😊 )

Storyograph is the most recent social media I have joined. Part of what I like about books is sharing my thoughts and hearing others thoughts. There were several controversies with goodreads which I used previously and I was not happy with that site. I find tracking my reading on storygraph is easier, more detailed and generally more fun. I am really excited to see how I can use this site in the future with reader advisory. For my profile picture this is a few years old. It was taken in a special collections I worked in and I really wanted to have a bookish photo for this site.

  1. Hi Kira! It’s awesome that social media has allowed you to feel more comfortable in socializing with others. Social media allows one to be more selective in what they react to and find content that aligns their comfort zone/interests. I have used filters before to keep specific content out of my timeline to eliminate stressors. I recommend it. I’ll have to check out Storyograph. I am a user of Goodreads, but I do see some limitations of the platform.

  2. Hello Kira! Congratulations on your last semester. I am hoping to graduate in the spring too. I think I use Facebook the most too. I think it is because we are able to have people from different parts of our lives on one platform, which is very convenient and easy to use. I know that when I post something about my personal life, my family members living in different states are happy to know what is going on in my life. I also see it as an opportunity to reconnect with my high school friends when they comment on my post or send me a message. It’s a nice way to interact with multiple people at once. Similar to you, I post less on Instagram. Instead, I like to follow creators and reshare quotes, videos, and anything relevant to my life at the moment. Lastly, I hadn’t heard of Storygraph before today. I am interested to learn more about it and maybe I’ll join that social media platform too, because I am always looking for new book recommendations.

  4. Hello Kira, it is very nice to meet you. I live more loosely through my social media than actually participating in it. I to am curious to see how the interaction between work and social media will turn out. I feel like social media is a valuable tool that has not yet been completely tap for its potential.
I look forward to hearing more from you Kira!

  5. Hi Kira! Congratulations on nearing the completion of your master’s degree! Your story about social media speaks to me. I completely understand what you're saying about being introverted. Social media allows us to socialize on our terms, which is such a relief. It offers a sense of comfort, especially for those of us who find big social gatherings overwhelming.
